Calhoun County purchased the 6,400-acre Green Lake property in 2012 in order to protect fish and wildlife habitat and provide for public recreational opportunities.
Green Lake provides a huge opportunity for Calhoun County. One of the largest natural freshwater lakes in Texas, the property will provide opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, birdwatching and many other activities that are open to the public year round.
The property was purchased using federal grant funds that prioritize habitat protection and restoration for fish and wildlife, and the County's science advisors have identified a number of unique (and some relatively rare) types of habitats. While the vast majority of the property is Green Lake itself, several hundred acres of upland habitat are available for park facilities like trails, fishing access points, observation platforms, and a campground.
